  • EAC Health Ministers Convene to Discuss how to tackle Ebola

    radioonefm90.com Monday, 1 June 2026 14:19:22

Story By Francis Ssenjobe; Health Ministers from the East African Community are holding an extra – ordinary meeting to deliberate on the ongoing Ebola outbreak affecting the region.  During the two days engagement that starts today 01 June 2026 until 2nd June 2026 , the Sectoral Council of Ministers responsible for Health will consider the proposed regional actions to curb the outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain. The convening of this high-level meeting is part of a series of urgent actions the EAC Secretariat has initiated, having already intensified regional coordination and preparedness measures following the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. The Extra-Ordinary Ministerial session will provide strategic guidance and coordinate the regional response across Partner States. Currently , the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reported 121 confirmed cases, including 17 deaths among confirmed cases, as well as 1077 suspected cases and 246 deaths among suspected cases. Uganda, as of 25 May 2026, had reported seven confirmed cases and one death among confirmed cases, with the first two cases involving patients who had travelled from the DRC and sought care in Uganda. The outbreak has mostly affected DRC, particularly Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces, with Ituri Province remaining the epicentre—particularly Mongbwalu, an area characterized by high population mobility and significant cross-border movement, raising concerns over further regional spread.

  • WHO calls for reviewing of Travel Restrictions on Ebola Affected Countries

    radioonefm90.com Monday, 1 June 2026 13:52:25

Story by Agencies The World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom wants countries, which have imposed travel restrictions and closed their borders following the outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, to reconsider the measures. This after countries like Canada and the US imposed travel restrictions and visa suspensions for residents from Congo, Uganda and South Sudan, citing the outbreak. Tedros says unity and solidarity are the best weapons of protection against the Ebola epidemic, while travel restrictions could discourage transparency in reporting cases. He also urges local communities to remain at the center of the response to the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which no approved vaccine or treatment currently exists. Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates warns its citizens and residents against travelling to three African countries amid growing concerns over the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the public should avoid trips to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda or South Sudan “unless absolutely necessary”. The UAE says the safety measure has been taken “in light of an evolving public health situation” as central Africa seeks to contain a rare strain of the virus for which there is no vaccination. It calls on Emiratis currently in those countries to “exercise the utmost caution” and follow “health and safety instructions” issued by local authorities.
