  • Sami’s Blog: Warm Plates

    mixfm.com.au Thursday, 4 June 2026 06:15:32

Remember when Gran warmed the dinner plates in the oven, so the meal stayed warm? It was not a fancy thing to do to impress the family.  It was a simple thing that was thoughtful.  My friend Benny visited his grandma and reminded me of this little slow act that has been largely lost in our fast world. It sent me down a rabbit hole of deep nostalgia about the little things we used to do before we were sucked into the world of mobile phones and the internet. Remember we would use talcum powder after every shower. Just because it felt great. Remember when you would be allowed one bottle of sarsparallia at Christmas or your birthday. Just the one.  What about how we would all send postcards to people we loved to show them how great the holiday destination really was.  I still remember sending a post card of The Big Banana to my bestie in year eight. Imagine the cringey cries that would lead to these days! Remember we collected stamps and $5 for your birthday was stuck inside the card from your Gramps with sticky tape. Remember we had burn offs in incinerators in the back yard.  We read the paper from front to back and that included the announcements such as who had died and who was now engaged. We had sprinklers that made us laugh for hours in summer when we ran through the arms of water.  We sat on back steps and ate cold watermelon.  Our milk was delivered to our door by a milkman and left in a glass bottle. We drank straight from drink taps and troughs at school and didn’t need water bottles that cost a quarter of your pay packet. We ate white bread covered in sliced banana and sugar sprinkles.  We hitched a lift in the back of Dad’s Ute. We only had TV with ads in every show and had to wait a whole week for the next episode of our favourite series. We collected ice cream sticks in the hope of winning a prize and then used the ice cream sticks to make Christmas tree decorations. We shrank chip packets in the oven and used them as fancy keyrings. Sheets were starched and ironed. We had so much less yet so much more effort went into everyday things that seemed to punctuate the act of living with importance. Today it feels like we are just surviving. And my favourite thing in the world to do was to sit in front of my tape deck and record each song from the Top 40 countdown so I could make my own playlists of music. No wonder I went into radio for my job.

  • Give Me 5 Hidden Hearts

    mixfm.com.au Thursday, 21 May 2026 00:00:00

Give Me 5 Hidden Hearts is a community art experience where creativity, generosity, and surprise come together to make a real difference. We’re inviting everyone to take part — from renowned artists and emerging creatives to hobby painters and first-time makers. If you love creating, you belong in this project. Hidden Hearts is built on a simple but powerful idea: small anonymous artworks, created by the community, exhibited together and sold to support sick children on the Sunshine Coast. What makes it special is the surprise. Every artwork is displayed without the artist’s name, and when the exhibition opens, buyers discover what they’ve purchased only after taking it home. That means a piece by a local hobbyist could sit alongside — and be purchased next to — a work by a highly recognised artist, all for a fixed price of $100. This creates a rare and exciting mix: for collectors, a chance to uncover hidden gems and even unexpected works from established artists; for emerging creators, a unique opportunity to exhibit and sell alongside leading talent in a truly equal, anonymous space. To take part, you’ll receive a small art card in the mail and are invited to transform it into an original artwork in any medium you choose. Examples of mediums include:• Acrylic painting• Watercolour• Pencil or charcoal drawing• Ink or pen illustration• Collage• Textile or fibre art Once complete, your artwork becomes part of a professionally curated anonymous exhibition, where every piece is valued equally and every “Hidden Heart” holds a story waiting to be discovered. All artworks will be professionally framed by Sunshine Coast Art & Framing Gallery. Exhibition Details Give Me 5 Hidden Hearts Art ExhibitionSaturday 26 September 20269:00am – 2:00pm Location:Sunshine Coast Art & Framing Gallery This is more than an exhibition — it’s a celebration of creativity, connection, and community impact. Every artwork will be available for $100, with all proceeds supporting sick children and their families on the Sunshine Coast through Wishlist, our local hospital charity. Presented by Mix FM’s Give Me 5, Hidden Hearts turns creativity into care in the most unexpected way. Whether you’re an established artist or simply making for joy, your work will sit alongside others as part of something meaningful, anonymous, and unforgettable. • Sami’s Blog: Cherry Blossoms

    mixfm.com.au Wednesday, 6 May 2026 06:55:00

I’m writing from Japan, where I’ve been soaking up every minute of a very special trip with my youngest child, 11-year-old August. Travel brings the good, the bad, the unexpected, and the unforgettable—and we’ve had it all. Let me start with the cherry blossoms. I have daydreamed for decades about seeing those pale pink blooms in real life, and they did not disappoint. They are breathtaking. Soft, delicate, and quietly joyful—they spark something deep in your soul. But what I wasn’t expecting was the wave of emotion that hit me. I was sitting on a park bench overlooking the Sakura and a still, peaceful lake, watching my son run around trying to catch falling petals in his baseball cap, turned upside down. I was smiling from ear to ear… and crying at the same time. Because in that moment, everything felt so clear. Life is beautiful. Life is fleeting. Life is meant to be lived. And one day, it will end for all of us. That is the whole bittersweet point to our days. It felt as if it was just yesterday when my youngest boy was four years old and we would split a milkshake together after we dropped his siblings at school before heading home to watch Play School on TV. Then we had the toy Matchbox car phase and the Monster Truck years. Early primary school was a blur of craft and learning to read. We played at the beach and diligently went to swimming lessons every Saturday. I would tuck my treasure into bed every night with a glass of milk and a story. And now my youngest child in his final year of primary school. Gulp. Stop, Father Time! You are going too fast. All those thoughts rushed through me as I watched Augie under those falling blossoms. The Sakura only bloom for about ten days each year. Then their cloud-like petals fall to the ground, gone almost as quickly as they arrived. And I realised—so do these moments. I held my son’s hand tightly for most of the trip, knowing these might be some of the last times he wants to hold my hand in public. Some of the last times he reaches for me when he’s hurt, or hungry, or bursting with something exciting to share. So, the cherry blossoms lived up to my lifelong dream of seeing them. I tried with all my might to burn their beauty into my memory. They will now forever remind me of my son. I would love a blossom tree in my backyard but they are not meant to thrive in our tropical state. So as a compromise, I am planting a jacaranda tree to watch it bloom every year. New adventures and new memories will come with each season and their falling purple petals.
